Sioux Area Metro (SAM) strives to provide affordable, reliable public transportation to all Sioux Falls residents through a variety of programs. Find out more about these programs below.
Early voters
SAM offers free bus rides to early voters during local elections.
Kids
Children 10 and under always ride free. They must be accompanied by an adult. Youth 11-18 can ride the bus unaccompanied for free with a current school ID or Freedom Pass. Riders can obtain a Freedom Pass at no cost from the SAM offices or the Downtown Bus Depot.
Veterans
Veterans can ride the bus for free by showing a valid photo ID when boarding. Valid forms of identification include Veterans Identification Cards (VICs) from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Veterans status driver’s licenses.
Pass-it-on
The Pass-it-on Program provides free bus passes to individuals experiencing economic difficulties. Riders can use free bus passes to get to:- Job search & training
- Employment (until 1st full paycheck)
- Education
- Grocery shopping
- Housing search
- Medical appointments
- AA or NA meetings
- Locating childcare
- Visits to case managers, representative payees, counselors, therapists & social service agencies.
